Prescott, Wis. man charged in wife's methadone overdose death

A Prescott, Wis. man was charged Wednesday with first-degree reckless homicide for allegedly giving his wife a lethal dose of methadone.

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reports Robert J. Whaley, 61, called Prescott police to his residence early Tuesday morning when his wife Emilie, 59, stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The newspaper reports that Robert Whaley told police that he and his wife shared a 100 mg bottle of methadone. Police recovered the unmarked bottle in the trash.

“I...gave her half and I took half,” he told police. “I killed her. I split it with her.”

Forum Communications reports that in the criminal complaint, Whaley told a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy that he purchased the methadone “from a subject in town” but did not say who it was.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 12. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.
