A few lucky Prince fans were treated to the first of a three-night, six-set run of shows at The Dakota Jazz Club in downtown Minneapolis by His Royal Purpleness on Wednesday night. WCCO talks to some of the giddy few who had tickets.

In a review, the Star Tribune said the first 80-minute, all-instrumental set before a small crowd was "as cool as it was curious."

Tickets for the shows sold out in about an hour for what are Minnesota-born Prince's first high-profile Twin Cities gigs since 1997, the newspaper noted. Musicians on stage Wednesday included drummer Ronald Bruner and bassist Andrew Gouche, the newspaper said.

It's expected that three new female musicians who have been generating a lot of buzz will be "auditioning" for Prince's band during the Thursday and Friday sets, Fox 9 reported.

The trio had never played together before meeting up in Minnesota, and they talked with Fox 9 about how they came to be auditioning for a band backing one of the most famous musicians in the world. They also share a few bits of Prince trivia: he's a great ping-pong player, and he's a lot funnier than you might think.

The trio is bassist Ida Nielsen, guitarist Donna Grantis, and drummer Hannah Ford, who was first contacted by Prince when she was at church. Here's a sample of her work:
