Prospective buyer could save Minnesota Stars

It appears a deal to sell the Minnesota Stars FC professional soccer team to a local owner is close. The general manager for the franchise tells the Business Journal in an email, "We are confident something is going to get done." NASL Commissioner David Downs told IMS on Monday, “We believe we are very close to a solution but we are still waiting to see how this plays out. It appears a deal to sell the Minnesota Stars FC professional soccer team to a local owner is close. The general manager for the franchise tells the Business Journal in an email, "We are confident something is going to get done."

NASL Commissioner David Downs told IMS on Monday, “We believe we are very close to a solution but we are still waiting to see how this plays out. I don’t expect it to be more than a week and it could be in a few days. Quite frankly it has to be that soon because we have to make schedules and announce season tickets but we are feeling very positive about the outcome.”

Downs declined to identify the prospective buyer other than to say it is "somebody local who we feel is very capable of shepherding the team into the future," according to the Business Journal.

The North American Soccer League took over the team last year, but warned the Stars they could be dropped as soon as next year without a buyer.

The Pioneer Press notes the Minnesota Stars won the league championship last year, had a 40 percent increase in attendance this year and went deep into the playoffs ago this month.
