Protesters rally for Terrance Franklin, killed in struggle with MPD

Even in the wake of news that Terrance Franklin's death is going to be reviewed by a grand jury, protesters still took to the Government Plaza in downtown Minneapolis Saturday afternoon demanding more action.

WCCO reports that "a couple of dozen" protesters chanted "no justice, no peace" at the rally. Minnesota Public Radio puts the figure at "about 100 people" demanding prosecutions of Minneapolis police, who shot Franklin, 22, during a struggle in the basement of a south Minneapolis house on May 10.

The protest, which was advertised on a Facebook page dedicated to Franklin's memory, is the latest in a series of rallies surrounding the fatal confrontation.

Though the MPD, police Chief Janee Harteau and Mayor R.T. Rybak have drawn criticism for remaining mostly hush on the incident, which started when Franklin fled police who had stopped him as a robbery suspect, there was plenty of activity this week, with the announcement Thursday that there would be a grand jury investigation.

Then the MPD countered Friday that Franklin's DNA had been found on the trigger of the submachine gun that killed him.

Two officers were shot during the attempted arrest but survived. The incident also killed a motorcyclist who was hit by an MPD vehicle headed to the scene 30 minutes after Franklin was shot.
