Father dies after defending daughter from bar assault; 1 arrest made

Police say a 40-year-old St. Paul man was beaten at a Maplewood bar early Wednesday after stepping in to break up a bar fight, and later died at his home. Police say the victim tried to stop three people who were fighting with a woman that the Pioneer Press says is believed to be his daughter. Police say two of the suspects then beat the victim, and all three fled.

Minnesota college grads shoulder some of the heaviest student loan debt in the US

Minnesota college students graduate with the fifth-highest amount of debt in the nation. That’s what a new study by the Project for Student Debt finds. The annual study says the average Minnesota college graduate leaves campus with $30,894 in debt. The study also found that 70 percent of college students in the state graduated with at least some debt.

‘Miracle’ puppy survives apparent abuse; gets dozens of stitches around neck

An animal shelter in Cloquet says it's a miracle that Miracle – a 1-year-old puppy – survived an apparent case of animal abuse. She had a deep cut on her neck that required more than 20 stitches and two drainage tubes. Once she's all healed, she'll be put up for adoption. Police are investigating the abuse.
