Rabbits swiped out of cages at Winona County Fair

It was a thief, not a magician, who pulled out a rabbit at the Winona County Fair.

Two of them, in fact, were stolen from their cages by an overnight intruder to the fairgrounds, the Winona Daily News reports. The newspaper says tufts of hair were pulled out of another rabbit and a fourth one was moved into a cage where it didn't belong.

Lisa Douglas, whose daughter owned one of the rabbits discovered stolen Friday, tells the Daily News her family called police in St. Charles, where the fairgrounds are located. But she says the family just wants the rabbit back and if it's returned there will be no questions asked and no charges filed.

Perhaps ironically, the Daily News had just spoken to 18-year-old Trianna Douglas last week as part of a Fair-related feature story on the work 4Hers put into raising and showing their animals. That story was also carried in Minnesota Farm Guide.

Raising rabbits and showing them at events across the region is a hobby for Trianna Douglas, who told the newspaper her family helps her care for 30 rabbits.

Not familiar with what showing rabbits entails?

4H has videos that demonstrate. Here's one:

County fair season is in full swing across Minnesota.

A Star Tribune story highlights a handful that are coming up in the next few weeks and notes that fairs seem to be trying to attract younger visitors while still paying homage to their history.
