Rallies in Duluth, Mpls. call for preserving Saturday mail service

Minnesotans rallied in Duluth and Minneapolis Sunday, pressuring the federal government to preserve six-day-a-week mail delivery..

The Postal Service says it can save billions of dollars by delivering only packages on Saturdays and eliminating other mail service.

WDIO reports protesters at the Duluth rally suggested other ways the agency could cut costs, starting with scaling back retiree health benefits.

One mail carrier described how important Saturday delivery is to some of the people on his route, saying some greet his arrival by offering a cup of hot chocolate or homemade cookies.

U.S. Sen. Al Franken and Congressman Rick Nolan were among those at the Duluth rally, while Gov. Mark Dayton attended the Minneapolis event.

National Public Radio reported last week there's disagreement in Washington on whether the Postal Service is legally obligated to deliver on Saturdays or is free to cut the service.
