Despite opposition from local taxpayers, Ramsey County now owns the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills, the Pioneer Press reports.
The county completed the $28 million transaction for the state's largest Superfund site earlier this week. Officials hope to have the polluted property cleaned up within the next five years and sell it to a developer.
How the 430-acre site will be redeveloped has yet to be determined, according to the Star Tribune. The Minnesota Vikings first proposed building a new football stadium on the contaminated land before agreeing to redevelop the Metrodome site in downtown Minneapolis.
The Ramsey County Board approved a deal in November to purchase the TCAAP site from the federal government.
