Twin Cities on Sunday set new record for lowest high temperature

Yes, we're several days into March and meteorological spring, but nobody told winter.

Temperatures Monday morning were nearing record low territory – it was minus-10 degrees at 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, which was near the current record of -13 set in 1873, KSTP reports.

Afternoon temperatures should rise to the single-digits above zero, according to KARE.

Windchill warnings across the state remain in effect until early Monday morning.

Sunday also set a record in the Twin Cities, with a record cold high of 3 degrees, which beat the old record of lowest high temperature of 5 set in 1989. Rochester on Tuesday had a high of minus-3 degrees, which beat the old record low high of 5 degrees, set in 1943.

The Duluth News Tribune highlighted low temperatures across the Northland from Sunday morning – the coldest was in Embarrass at minus-44 degrees.

The average high for the Twin Cities is 35 degrees, according to KSTP. The metro has now had 50 days with a below-zero low temperature this winter, which is the fifth most subzero temperatures ever in a winter season.

The Star Tribune reported this is the coldest start to March in the Twin Cities since 1962.

Thankfully, there is a little relief in sight.

The National Weather Service says warmer air will move in across the state on Monday and temperatures will get warmer and warmer as the week goes on. Also in the forecast: light snow through the week.

MRP News' Updraft blog says temperatures could potentially hit the 32-degree mark on Thursday, especially in southwestern Minnesota, but the longer forecast says temperatures could continue to fall below average.

The Climate Prediction Center also predicts colder-than-normal temperatures.

Here's a look at the forecast around the state, according to the National Weather Service:

– Twin Cities: Monday a high of 9, low of 4; Tuesday a high of 19, low of 5; Wednesday a high of 21, low of 13; Thursday a high of 28 low of 20. There is a slight chance of snow later in the week.

– Moorhead: Monday a high of 6, low of -1; Tuesday a high of 14, low of 3; Wednesday a high of 19, low of 13; Thursday a high of 27, low of 13. There is a slight chance of snow throughout the week.
