‘Rehab Addict’ star could lose Minneapolis home she bought from city for $2

Television star Nicole Curtis might lose a north Minneapolis house she bought from the city for just $2 because it's taking too long to renovate.

The host of HGTV's "Rehab Addict" bought the run-down home at 1522 Hillside Ave. N in November 2012 on the premise she would need to complete major repairs within a year of sale.

But the Star Tribune reports most of those repairs haven't been carried out and it's attracted complaints from neighbors.

City council member Blong Yang toured the home in late June along with a city appraiser and met with Curtis last week – a day before she held a cancer fundraiser at the property – but was given no timeline on when the repairs would be carried out.

"She didn't say much," he told the newspaper. "I don't know what the plan is. I think we as a city have to figure out what to do at this point, because it has been a burden on the neighbors who live there."

Curtis has been defiant on social media in the wake of the renewed interest in the property, accusing Twin Cities news outlets on Facebook of "having a slow week" and suggested people attending her cancer fundraiser last Sunday were "harassed and bullied."

She also that she hired a contractor who was due to complete work on the house by December 2014, but they kept pushing the date back.

Some neighbors unhappy

WCCO spoke to some of the neighbors who attended the fundraiser to raise points with Curtis, with Jon Lundberg saying: "We decided to come down to the event today not to distract from the money going to a good cause but to point out the fact that this is a charade and a lie."

"Piles of rocks, foundation — everything was left as if time stood still and the earth stopped," Juliee Oden, who lives across the street, added.

Curtis is a crusader for the preservation of historic homes and she successfully intervened when a developer started the demolition of William T. Boutwell house in Stillwater in January 2015.

CityPages reports though that she was in conflict with City Council member Lisa Bender this past February after preservationists failed to save the 123-year-old Orth House in Uptown from demolition, with Curtis calling Bender a "destroyer of history."
