Relative arrested in case of Bemidji 6-year-old who froze to death

Bemidji police say they've made an arrest in the case of a 6-year-old girl who was found frozen to death in front of her apartment building on a February morning.

The Bemidji Pioneer reports police say a 22-year-old woman is in custody and is expected to be charged on Monday with felony neglect and second-degree manslaughter.

KSTP says the arrested woman was a cousin of 6-year-old Mercedes Mayfield, who died on Feb. 27, when the temperature in Bemidji was 27 below zero.

On that morning police received calls from Mayfield's mother and from a neighbor reporting a medical emergency. When they arrived officers said the girl was wearing a coat, hat, gloves, and boots but was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A subsequent autopsy conducted by the Ramsey County medical examiner confirmed hypothermia as the cause of Mayfield's death.

Valley News Live has the full text of the statement released by Bemidji police Friday. The department says its detectives worked in conjunction with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Beltrami County's sheriff's office, social services department, and county attorney.
