Organizers are canceling the 2014 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.
WDIO in Duluth reports that board member Pat Olson said they plan to use 2014 as a "regroup" year. In the report, Olson said they will use the year to fundraise for the 2015 race.
According to the report funding hasn't been coming in this year and that along with unpredictable weather has forced them to cancel. It is the third time in the history of the race that it has been cancelled.
According to KBJR Olson claimed the weather during the past two years, which cancelled the 2012 event and postponed this year's race, is also a factor.
It takes a minimum of $45,000 to run the race. Olson believes that many people may be directing their money elsewhere, especially in the aftermath of the 2012 flood that hit the region.
She says they will also use the year to reassess the importance of the race to the Northland.
