Report: Mayo's plan B ties state funding to private investment

Supporters of the Mayo Clinic plan to roll out a revised proposal for state-funded improvements to the Rochester area at a Capitol hearing Friday.

The Associated Press got an advance look at the plan and reports it makes state funding contingent on spending by local governments and private investors.

Some key lawmakers were not enthusiastic about Mayo's original request for more than half-a-billion dollars worth of improvements to infrastructure in Rochester. That led to a reworking of the proposal this week.

Mayo considers the state spending a prerequisite before the clinic embarks on a 20-year, $5 billion expansion. The Legislature's reluctance to embrace the proposal prompted this week's remark by Mayo's CEO, who said 49 states would be happy to have Mayo's investment.
