President Donald Trump is expected to nominate 10 judges to the lower federal courts on Monday – and one of those who can expect a promotion is from Minnesota.

The New York Times is reporting that among the judges Trump is expected to announce on Monday is Associate Justice David R. Stras, who currently plies his trade on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Provided his nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate, Justice Stras would leave the state as he's expected to be put forward for the 8th Circuit District Court of Appeals in St. Louis, Missouri.

The newspaper reports there is concern among some liberal groups that Trump intends to pack the courts with ultra conservatives.

The nominations will be the first step taken by the Trump administration to fill more than 120 vacancies on the lower federal courts.

Stras was a former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and was also a law professor at the University of Minnesota between 2004-2010, according to his Minnesota Judicial Branch profile.

He became an associate justice to the Minnesota Supreme Court in July 2010, with his current term expiring in 2019.

MPR reported that Stras was among those being considered to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Neil Gorsuch was eventually selected as Trump's nominee.

And despite his apparently conservative profile, MPR noted that Stras on several occasions sided with one the Minnesota Supreme Court's more liberal judges, Justice Alan Page.
