Minneapolis police say a 2-year-old boy was shot and killed by his 4-year-old brother who was playing with a gun Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at 1907 7th St. S. in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood around 12:45 p.m. KARE 11 says officers found the toddler with a critical gunshot wound. The boy died before he could be transported to the hospital.

Police say the 4-year-old got a hold of his father's gun that's usually kept high in a closet. A one-year-old child and the children's parents were also home at the time of the shooting.

WCCO reports a 5-year-old also lives at the house, but was not home at the time of the incident. The children are currently in protective custody while the parents are being interviewed by investigators.

In Minnesota, it is a crime to store a loaded firearm in a manner where a child can gain access to it. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office will review the case for any possible charges.

Family members identify the toddler as Neegnco Xiong, the Star Tribune says, and the father as Kao Xiong and the mother as Ma Vang.
