You know how Nintendo discontinued the release of its wildly popular NES Mini? Well, turns out there might be a method to their madness.

After cashing in on the craze for retro gaming, the Japanese console giant has set its sights on yet another nostalgic release, with rumors saying it will next put out a mini version of the Super Nintendo.

Eurogamer, citing sources close to the company, reports that the SNES Mini is currently in development and is scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year.

It was for this reason that the company discontinued the NES Mini, despite selling out around the world. Gamers went crazy for the novelty item, with demand so high that consoles are exchanging hands for many times the sticker price.

Nintendo fans already fan-gasming over the 30 built-in games included with the NES Classic Edition will be whetting their lips at the prospect of a SNES version that could come with games like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Nothing has been confirmed by the notoriously enigmatic company, but TechCrunch said it would be surprising if Nintendo didn't have something else up its sleeve after the NES Classic "struck a chord" with consumers.

By February, Nintendo had sold 1.5 million NES Classics across the globe and apologized to fans for not having enough in supply, BGR notes.

It has since launched its current generation console, the Nintendo Switch, with 2.4 million units sold in the first six weeks it was on sale, according to GamesIndustry.

Now, for your enjoyment, here's 10 hours of "Aquatic Ambience" from Donkey Kong Country.
