There are some new details coming out today about the death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez and two friends were killed early in the morning of Sept. 25 when the boat they were on crashed into a jetty off of South Beach.

Multiple media reports say investigators identified high speed and alcohol as contributing factors to the accident.

According to a report in the Miami Herald, authorities say all three men had a strong odor of alcohol on them when their bodies were recovered by divers.

USA Today reports the three men had been at a bar where alcohol was served shortly before the accident, and that a receipt for alcohol purchased at the bar was found in one of their pockets.

Fernandez, 24, was one of the promising young pitchers in the Marlins organization. He was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA in 182.1 innings for the Marlins this year, prior to the accident.

His death shocked the baseball world near the end of the regular season. Teams from all across the league honored Fernandez after his death.
