A man is dead after his canoe capsized on a reservoir near Rochester.

The Post Bulletin says the victim – a 20-year-old Stewartville man – had been fishing with another man Saturday morning.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office tells ABC 6 that a call came in around 9:30 a.m. reporting that the men's canoe had flipped over at Silver Creek Reservoir.

KARE 11 says the men – who were not wearing life jackets – decided to swim to shore. At one point, the other man tried to drag the victim back, however the station says the victim went underwater and didn't come back up.

Only one man made it to shore.

Then around 12:30 p.m., ABC 6 says the man's body was found in 12 feet of water. His identity will be released Monday.

Last year there were 18 boating related deaths in Minnesota – the most since 2005.

The Department of Natural Resources said most victims were males between 20 and 60 who were not wearing life jackets.

“Getting that high-risk demographic to put their safety first by putting on a life jacket is the key to seeing a steep drop in boating deaths in the future, not just in Minnesota but around the country," Munson Badini, boat and water safety outreach coordinator with the DNR, told BringMeTheNews.
