Reward triples in St. Croix Co. bear poaching case
A number of outdoor and wildlife organizations have pitched in to increase the reward for information in a poaching case that left a black bear decapitated in Somerset Township, Wis.
KARE 11 reports the reward was raised from $500 to $1750.
The carcass was discovered on Feb. 24 in a ditch just off Rice Lake Road. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources determined the bear had been illegally shot while hibernating inside a culvert west of Star Prairie on County Highway H and dragged to a second location where the head was removed.
Authorities suspect at least two people were involved, given the 250-to-300 pound bear would be too much weight for one person to transport.
Anyone with information is asked to call the DNR hotline at 1-800-847-9367.
