Roads reopen after mudslides caused by heavy rains


Highways have reopened in southeastern Minnesota after heavy rain.

The heavy rainfall caused numerous mudslides and forced the closure of some highways in the region Friday night into Saturday.

KARE 11 reports, that state Highway 61 was temporarily closed in Winona County. The Minnesota State Patrol said the highway reopened by 4 a.m.

The Associated Press reports, the mudslides trapped a semitrailer on Highway 61 on Saturday.

The flood warnings have subsided now, but the National Weather Service reports the heaviest rainfall totals were in Fillmore County. Over 5.8 inches of rain fell near Preston.

WINONA, Minn. - Heavy rainfall closed some highways and caused flooding in southeast Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service.

The torrential rain caused numerous mudslides that temporarily closed Highway 61 in Winona County. The Minnesota State Patrol said that the highway was reopened by 4 a.m.

Other Winona County roads impacted by mudslides were Highway 15 and Highway 17, the weather service said.

A flood warning for southeast Minnesota remains in effect on Saturday after thunderstorms dropped between 2 to 6 inches across the area.

Galesville received 4.14 inches and La Crescent had 3.35 inches. Pilot Mound in Fillmore County had 3.88 inches, Trempealeau 3.14 and the town of Holland in La Crosse County 3.11, according to the weather service.

The heavy rainfall was localized, as Alma in Buffalo County received only 0.32 inches.

There is the potential for more thunderstorms Saturday afternoon, mainly from 1 to 5 p.m. Cooler conditions are expected overnight and into Sunday.
