Music legends including Mick Jagger and Bono are among those who will feature in a new Prince documentary, scheduled for release next year.

Screen Daily revealed on Tuesday that Michael Kirk (Find Your Groove) will direct and produce a documentary, titled Prince: R U Listening.

It will chart the musician's early years on the Minneapolis music scene and his subsequent "rise to super-stardom" as seen through the eyes of his bandmates, friends and family.

Among his musical peers interviewed for the film will be The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger, U2's Bono, and Lenny Kravitz, Screen Daily says.

There will also be contributions from Dez Dickerson, who toured with Prince's band in 1979, and André Cymone, the Purple One's close friend and the original bassist for his teenage band, Grand Central.

Jagger has been a huge fan of Prince's ever since he burst onto the scene, telling Rolling Stone in 1995 that Prince "had been overlooked" and compared him to James Brown as a performer.

"He broke a lot of musical modes and invented a lot of styles and couldn't keep up with himself," Jagger told the publication. "[He is] very prolific, which is rare. Mostly people write three songs and repeat themselves.

"Prince has a lot of talent as a writer, and I've seen great performances by Prince. He's outperformed almost everyone. I'd rate him at the top. I don't think there's a lot of competition from new artists."

Following Prince's death at Paisley Park in April, Bono paid the following tribute on Instagram: "I never met Mozart, I never met Duke Ellington or Charlie Parker, I never met Elvis. But I met Prince."

Details of of when the documentary will be released haven't been revealed, but it's expected around spring 2017.
