Rod Grams laid to rest: 'a farm boy who wanted to fix something'

Author:

Friends and colleagues paid tribute to Rod Grams at a funeral service near the eastern Minnesota farm where the former Senator was born.

The Pioneer Press reports tiny Zion Lutheran Church of Crown set up a tent on the church lawn to accommodate the hundreds of mourners. The newspaper reports the Rev. Richard Kunst, a former aide on his Senate staff, admired Grams for his lack of pretension, saying "He was just a farm boy from Crown, Minn., who wanted to fix something that was broken."

The Star Tribune has a gallery of photos from the service, attended by prominent Republicans ranging from former Sen. Dave Durenberger to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Grams was elected to the House and Senate after a career in broadcasting, that culminated with a decade as a television news anchor in the Twin Cities. He died of colon cancer at his home in Crown last week.

In Washington on Thursday Bachmann was joined by others in Minnesota delegation in delivering remarks honoring Grams' legacy.
