Roseville police dog, stabbed in 2010, dies

The Roseville police dog partially paralyzed in 2010 after being stabbed by a burglary suspect in line of duty has died at age 11, the Associated Press reports.

Officer John Jorgensen said his K9 partner, Major, was euthanized this week at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, the AP says. The German shepherd had a bladder infection and pneumonia. The dog's injury in 2010 left it without use of its back legs, but it got around with a wheeled harness.

The Roseville Police Department had awarded the animal its Medal of Honor after the dog was injured. Roseville Patch reports that news of the animal's death spread to a nationwide network in the law enforcement community via a Facebook page called Vested Interest in K9s, dedicated to outfitting police dogs with protective vests.
