Officer John Jorgensen said his K9 partner, Major, was euthanized this week at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, the AP says. The German shepherd had a bladder infection and pneumonia. The dog's injury in 2010 left it without use of its back legs, but it got around with a wheeled harness.
The Roseville Police Department had awarded the animal its Medal of Honor after the dog was injured. Roseville Patch reports that news of the animal's death spread to a nationwide network in the law enforcement community via a Facebook page called Vested Interest in K9s, dedicated to outfitting police dogs with protective vests.
