Rue 21 is closing hundreds of stores, including 6 in Minnesota

Teen fashion retailer rue 21 is closing hundreds of stores across the U.S., and five of them will be in Minnesota.

According to its website, the company's stores at the Eden Prairie Center, Riverdale Village in Coon Rapids, the Elk Park Center in Elk River, the Medford Outlet Center, River Hills Mall in Mankato, and the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria will close.

They are among the 400 nationwide The Associated Press says the company is closing, as it moves its attentions more to online sales.

In a statement on its Facebook page, rue 21 said: "It’s true – we are closing some stores. It was a difficult but necessary decision. We still have hundreds of locations across the country, and our website, open for business."

Dates for the closures have not yet been set. The closures represent a third of the rue 21s in Minnesota, leaving the state with 12 locations.

Customers who have accrued "rueBUCKS" reward points will not be able to redeem them at closing locations.

The Business Journal notes the retailer had a total debt of $824 million and was seeking additional sources of credit.

There have been a raft of store closure announcements since the start of the year, with retailers including JCPenney, Macy's and Gander Mountain among them.

One of the malls worst hit by recent closures is Elk Park Center, which including the soon-to-shutter rue 21 store will also be losing or has lost its Payless ShoeSource and RadioShack outlets.
