Saks Off Fifth will return to downtown Minneapolis in 2016

Well, that didn't take long.

Just over a week after Saks Off Fifth closed its store in Gaviidae Common on Nicollet Mall, the outlet chain has found a new home, continuing its presence in downtown Minneapolis.

And shoppers won't have much further to go either, with WCCO reporting that its parent company Hudson Bay Co. has signed a lease for 40,321 square feet in Minneapolis City Center, across Nicollet Mall from its former home.

"This city has been a strong market for us, and Minneapolis City Center provides us with a vibrant location in which to serve our exceedingly loyal customers," HBC's Jonathan Greller told the station.

Shoppers will have to wait until April 2016 for the new store to open, so the nearest Saks Off Fifth in the meantime will be at Eagan's Twin Cities Premium Outlets Mall.

Finance and Commerce reports Saks will be moving into the former Office Depot space in the City Center building, but will also be taking 16,000 square feet of space on skyway level.

Securing Saks is a coup for City Center owners Shorenstein Properties, according to the Star Tribune, which says the move could attract new "high-fashion retail outlets" to what the newspaper describes as a "beleaguered space."

The Saks Off Fifth unit in Gaviidae Common will be filled by a marquee Walgreens store.
