Sales of the high-ethanol gasoline blend E85 in Minnesota have tanked, the Star Tribune reports.

New data from the state Commerce Department indicate there was a 26 percent decline in E85 sales last year from 2011.

The decline marked the weakest sales of the corn-based fuel since 2005, the Star Tribune noted. E85 sales have typically seen steady growth – this was only the second time that the yearly E85 volume has fallen in 17 years.

Things were looking better for the E85 industry last year.
