The folks in New Ulm have another reason to toast their hometown brewery. Construction on a new building at the 150 year old August Schell Brewery in New Ulm will begin Monday.

The New Ulm Journal reports that Phase 1 of a $6 million expansion plan will create a building an an alleyway that will link the facility's two main building. The project will make space to install a new yeast propagation system, hot and cold water tanks and new tanks to hold the finished beer before it is bottled.

The second phase of the project, scheduled to begin in September, will put a new canning machine in the new building. It will also install a cost saving energy recovery system in the brew house to capture steam generated in the brewing process and convert it into energy.

The expanded space will allow the brewery's production capacity to expand by as much as 100,000 barrels per year. The increased production will keep up with an increasing demand for beer from microbreweries.
