Governor’s Fishing Opener update May 12, 2012 6:00 pm...

It is probably fate that Governor Mark Dayton has had such a good political year, because his luck ran out opening day. Dayton, fishing with noted guide Travis Frank, landed no walleye on Lake Waconia, a lake loaded with the state fish. The governor did land a nice bluegill.

Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon, guided by Matt Peters did no better.

If you haven’t been skunked, you haven’t been fishing, goes the saying. Travis Frank, the governor’s guide said that he agreed with the adage, but noted, “You really don’t want that to happen when you are supposed to put the governor on a big one.”

Lake Waconia lived up to its billing as one of the premier walleye lakes in the state. Several big fish were weighed in, including a 28.5 inch walleye. Jeff Renfroe was on the other end of that hawg. Daniel DeBegginies weighed in the biggest northern pike at 33.5 inches.

The opener wraps up this evening at the Waconia Event Center with the traditional fish fry. The governor and Lt. governor will be eating loaners.
