Schmidt Brewery sign to light up St. Paul again

The illuminated Schmidt Brewery sign is making a comeback in St. Paul's Fort Road neighborhood.

WCCO says the Schmidt sign will be lit June 21 in conjunction with the inaugural GermanFest Minnesota.

The Business Journal says the original Schmidt sign went away in 1990, when the Minnesota Brewing Co. bought Schmidt Brewery and replaced the sign with a different one to tout its Landmark brand.

The sign can be seen on West Seventh Street above the old Schmidt Brewery campus.

Developer Dominium, which converted the former brewery into artist's lofts, said a year ago that it would possibly replace the former neon sign with LED lighting, the Pioneer Press said.

Dominium purchased the brewery site in November 2012 and renovation began in January 2013. Lofts are now available.

St. Paul city officials and representatives from Dominium will take part in a sign lighting ceremony June 21 at 8:30 p.m.
