School bus catches fire on I-94; no injuries reported

Publish date:

A school bus caught fire Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 94 in Maplewood. The bus was empty except for the driver, who escaped the vehicle safely, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Images from a traffic camera show the bus was on the exit ramp at Century Avenue at about 3 p.m. when it started on fire and became engulfed in flames, KSTP reports.

Emergency responders were called and put out the fire about 30 minutes later.

A viewer sent this raw video of the fire to WCCO. At about 16 seconds into the video, the school bus – which is in flames – begins rolling forward and nearly crashes into a fire truck before ending up in the grass.

The cause of the fire isn't known at this time. The bus was operated by the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale district, MPR News reports.

A spokeswoman for the school district tells MPR News the driver was between routes when he smelled smoke and pulled over. She said the driver reported the fire started in the engine.

MnDOT said the exit ramp to Century Avenue from I-94 eastbound was reopened about 4:30 p.m.
