A former paraprofessional at a Rochester school is charged with having sex with a 10th-grade student, KAAL reports.
According to the station, the criminal complaint says 38-year-old Jody Lynn Nelson of Stewartville began hanging out and drinking with the victim and his friend during her first year working at Mayo High School.
The inappropriate sexual contact occurred in 2009 the complaint says, according to the Rochester Post Bulletin. At a party one night in October of 2009, the complaint says Nelson was seen going into a bedroom with the student, and they remained there for more than an hour, the paper reports.
KAAL says the victim told investigators at one point, other people at the party jimmied open the locked door and entered the bedroom while he and Nelson were having sex. According to the station, the complaint says a girl at the party saw Nelson and the victim together, and told investigators Nelson told her not to say anything.
According to the Post Bulletin, Nelson says she remembers drinking at a party around that time, but says she doesn't remember being in a bedroom. KAAL says Nelson claims she was at a neighbor's house.
The Post Bulletin reports an investigation by district officials in February of 2013 led to the charges; Nelson resigned in March of 2013.
Nelson is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony. She faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted, a fine of up to $30,000, or both.
