Police in Wright County say an 18-year-old man is believed to have drowned after going missing while swimming in a river.

Sheriff Joe Hagerty said deputies were called to the North Fork Crow River, near the Keats Avenue SW bridge in Middleville Township just before 7 p.m. on Monday evening.

They were told that 18-year-old Levi Wuollet of Dassel had gone underwater and hadn't resurfaced while swimming with friends and family in the river.

A search was launched on Monday evening and continued into Tuesday. As of Tuesday afternoon he still hadn't been found.

The sheriff's office water patrol was assisted in the search by the Minnesota DNR and Hennepin County, which brought specialized sonar equipment.

Hagerty said that the heavy rains seen during the spring have led to fast-moving water in streams and rivers, which may also have hidden hazards such as boulders and logs.

KARE 11 reports that Wuollet graduated from Dassel-Cokato High School last week.
