An 8-year-old elementary school student injured three children with a knife on Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 7:15 a.m. at Pleasantview Elementary School in Sauk Rapids, local police said in a press release.

The second grade boy brought a kitchen knife from home and "randomly" cut three other students, aged 8, 9 and 13 years old.

Two of the students were taken to St. Cloud Hospital with minor injuries, but were released later.

By the time police arrived the suspect and the three victims were in the school office.

The suspect student was taken into custody and, due to his age, was later released to his parents. The Benton County Attorney's Office will decide on charges.

Interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins described the attack to the Star Tribune as "an unfortunate incident" that happened before school started as students were arriving.
