Second quarter profits surge for UnitedHealth Group

Steady enrollment growth gets the credit for the jump in UnitedHealth Group Inc.’s second-quarter net income, up by almost 8 percent.

The Associated Press reports the Minnetonka-based company's earnings beat Wall Street estimates.

The company earned $1.44 billion in the three months ending June 30. That’s up from $1.34 billion a year earlier. Revenue climbed 12 percent. It also raised the low end of its full-year earnings forecast.

Enrollment increased by 3 million people, bringing total enrollment to 45 million.
