More than 25,000 homes in the Twin Cities area are without power Wednesday morning following thunderstorms overnight.

A storm system made its way across Minnesota Tuesday night, with the west-central area hit with heavy rain, hail and wind gusts touching 70 mph.

It then hit the east of the state, including parts of the metro area, with power lines and trees brought down by wind and lightning strikes.

According to the Xcel Energy outage map, electricity is out in almost 24,000 homes in the Twin Cities and 3,000-plus more along the Minnesota/Wisconsin border.

Wyoming Police Department was among the authorities reporting damage overnight, posting pictures to Twitter showing large trees being uprooted, split open by lightning strikes and power lines felled.

The southern half of the city was without power for at least two hours after one of the lines came down, the department said.

Serious damage is also being reported in Alexandria, where the National Weather Service said a gust of 68 mph was recorded just before midnight.

Residents have been waking up to find damage on their property, with tree limbs snapped by the winds.

Utility workers have been out restoring power Wednesday morning, with Runestone Electric's outage map showing only a handful of homes are without power.

GoMN Sports' Joe Nelson was out following the storm as it tracked its way from the Dakotas into Minnesota, you can watch one of his Facebook live videos below.
