The discovery of a body near a rural southern Minnesota highway could signal the beginning of a mystery in Freeborn County, where officials are now investigating what they call a suspicious death.

The body was apparently discovered off Interstate 90 northeast of Albert Lea by a property owner – authorities later located the "possible human remains" near a fence, according to a news release from the Freeborn County Sheriff.

Authorities say the remains – which seem to be those of a male – have been there for a number of years.

However, the release indicates there are no missing persons cases in Freeborn County that can be connected to the body.

The sheriff's office says more details will be released once cause and manner of death of the individual are determined by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

In the meantime, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also on the case, as are crime scene personnel.
