A teenage girl thought she was being pulled over by a police officer in rural Minnesota. But authorities say the man who pulled her over wasn't a real cop.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office says a man driving a sedan with red and blue lights pulled the teen over on Highway 23 near Spicer – which is northeast of Wilmar – on Wednesday.

The man is said to have been dressed like a deputy sheriff: dark colored cargo pants; light colored button-down, short-sleeved shirt with an emblem sewed on; and a law enforcement type belt.

He told the girl that he pulled her over because she had a New London-Spicer High School parking pass on her vehicle, the news release says.

The man reportedly said officers were pulling over any vehicle with those passes because of homecoming activities and possible pranks.

The cop imposter then asked to search the girl's vehicle.

Officials say the girl's mother reported the incident.

Now the sheriff's office is trying to figure out who did this.

The man is described as being 6 feet tall, average build, and white with no facial hair.

He drove a sedan with red and blue lights in the grill.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 320-214-6700.

Authorities want people to know that they have the right to ask to see an officer's identification to verify that he or she is an authorized law enforcement official.
