A sheriff's deputy was injured when his squad car collided with the cow he was looking for.

Daniel Steven Schulz, a 30-year-old deputy with the Kanabec County Sheriff's Office, was searching for a cow that had been reported on a roadway in Arthur Township around 10 p.m. Monday, the Minnesota State Patrol's report says.

When Schulz was taking a second look through the area, the cow ran out of a ditch and Schulz hit it.

He was transported to First Light Hospital in Mora with non-life threatening injuries. Kanabec County Sheriff Brian Smith told GoMN Tuesday that Schulz was released from the hospital Monday night, but was unable to return to work on Tuesday.

The cow, which died, is believed to belong to McVay Farms, which is located adjacent to where the crash happened, Smith said, noting the cow probably weight between 1,000 to 1,500 pounds.
