Shooting at St. Catherine University puts campus on lockdown  – police still looking for a suspect

Students were on lockdown for a few hours, and police are still looking for a suspect.

Update: Police say the shooter was made up, and the security officer actually shot himself. Read the updated story here.

A shooting at St. Catherine University in St. Paul led to an hourslong search for the gunman, with students told to stay indoors as the campus went on lockdown.

The shooting happened on the St. Kate's campus, the St. Paul Police Department tweeted

A security officer with the school's Department of Public Safety approached someone in a wooded area and told them to leave, KSTP reported. The person then shot the security officer in the shoulder and fled.

The officer's injury wasn't considered life-threatening, according to St. Paul police.

The campus was put on lockdown right after the shooting. The university had students and staff stay indoors from about 11 p.m. until just after 2 a.m., as police searched all the buildings and residence halls across campus.

Snaps from the scene show students indoors and apparently being told to stay where they were.

The all clear was given at 2:08 a.m. after no suspect was found.

St. Paul police said it would issue an update if that changed, but there was no news as of about 7 a.m. Wednesday.

St. Kate's said classes will go on normally Wednesday.

St. Kate's prohibits guns, rifles and other weapons on its campus, calling itself "a peaceful community dedicated to non-violence."

From 2013-2015 the St. Paul campus reported a single aggravated assault, with no killings.
