Sinkhole collapses portion of Raymond Ave. in St. Paul

Utility crews are working to repair a sinkhole caused by a damaged sewer line in St. Paul.

The Pioneer Press reports a portion of Raymond Avenue between Manvel and Hampden streets is closed while the situation is assessed. Traffic will be detoured to Energy Park Drive, Highway 280 and Territorial Road.

St. Paul sewer utility manager Bruce Elder said the sinkhole is 18 inches in diameter and appears to go down several feet.

The sewer will take one to two days to fix, followed by street repair. The work is not expected to affect water service in the neighborhood.

In 2001, a man walking on a sidewalk in downtown St. Paul was injured after a 15-foot-deep sinkhole opened up beneath him.

A massive sinkhole beneath a house in Florida swallowed a man Friday while he was in his bedroom.
