Republicans in three Minnesota Congressional districts elected Ron Paul supporters to be delegates to the party's national convention. So far Paul has claimed ten of the state's delegates and Rick Santorum two. Four more districts and Minnesota's at-large delegates remain to be chosen.

Rick Santorum will visit Rochester on Monday morning, Ron Paul will rally in St. Cloud, and Newt Gingrich will appear Monday evening in Bloomington. MPR has details on the campaign events. The Republican presidential hopeful will be in St. Cloud May 18. Ron Paul is Mitt Romney's only remaining challenger for the GOP nomination. Last month, Paul took 20 of Minnesota's 24 Congressional District delegates.

Most Minnesota Republicans who are headed to this year's national Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., are first-time delegates. Many are Ron Paul supporters, and true to form, they have an independent streak. They're seeking out cheap hotels away from the celebrity politicians and making arrangements for an unconventional convention experience.

About 50,000 Republicans showed up for the grassroots presidential election event in Minnesota. Compare that with the 130,000 tally for the August 2010 primary election. The number of Minnesota caucus voters fell short of Colorado's 65,000 count, but beat's sparsely populated Nevada's 30,000 number from Saturday.

Bill Batchelder's loyalty to Rick Santorum was dyed in the wool. Batchelder was the only one of 40 delegates representing Minnesota to cast a vote for Santorum (33 went to Ron Paul, six to Romney) at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday. Santorum visited Batchelder's sweater factory in Bemidji last February, a trip prompted by the former Pennsylvania senator’s fondness for Batchelder’s Bemidji Woolen Mills sweater vests.
