Waves of snow may mean 12 inches in northern MN by midweek; then brrrr

Successive waves of snowfall could leave parts of northern Minnesota under 10 inches or more of fresh powder by Wednesday evening, which is when temperatures across the state will head deep into the freezer.

As the News Tribune reports, Duluth and northeastern Minnesota will be under a winter weather advisory from noon Monday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters say the first bout of snow could bring 3 to 5 inches Monday, with 10 inches possible by the time skies clear up. Then by the weekend highs will barely climb above zero, with lows in the teens below zero.

The story is similar in the Red River Valley, where WDAY says the last of three rounds of snow will bring 3 to 6 inches on Wednesday. Forecaster Aaron White says snowfall amounts over the next three days will affect how cold it gets by next weekend, with more snow meaning colder temps. But White says highs may stay below zero.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks says the snow on Tuesday and Wednesday will be accompanied by winds in the 20 m.p.h. range, which will limit visibility and send wind chills well below zero. They've issued a winter storm watch from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Here are details about both the weather advisory for the northeast and the storm watch for the northwest.

In the Twin Cities area, successive rounds of precipitation are likely but snowfall totals are expected to be lighter. KSTP report snow will be mixed with rain on Tuesday, then eventually change to all snow Tuesday night, with accumulations possible.

More light snow is expected Wednesday and Thursday. Then on Friday, what meteorologist Paul Douglas, writing in the Star Tribune, calls "a fresh Siberian breeze" will arrive, with a wake-up temperature of -1 and a wind chill of -10.

The forecast map from the Weather Service in Duluth shows more than 12 inches of snow possible by Wednesday in an area from Bemidji through the Twin Ports and up the shore to Grand Marais.
