Solved! The case of the Wisconsin road covered in Skittles

Hundreds of thousands of Skittles. All red. Mysteriously strewn about a Wisconsin road.

We've got an answer to the great Skittles-on-the-road mystery of 2017.

Everyone had questions about how the heck hundreds of thousands of red Skittles ended up covering a rural Wisconsin road one Tuesday in January.

The sheriff's office said they were headed to a farm, to be used as feed for cattle. But Mars – which makes Skittles – said that shouldn't have been the case, and they weren't sure how the boxes of candy ended up there.

But we've got an answer now. Kind of.

Mars said Friday there was a "miscommunication" between the people who handle waste management and a vendor, FOX 6 reports. According to The Associated Press, Mars thinks it was just an accident.

So rest easy Sherlock – you can move on to your next case.
