St. Paul leads poll for 'best romantic getaway'

Are you in the mood for love? With Valentine's Day around the corner, you won't have to look far to find one of the best romantic cities in North America.

While you may not expect it, St. Paul has been nominated as one of the top romantic getaways in North America.

As of Tuesday evening St. Paul was leading in the poll of Best Romantic North American Getaways, according to a USA Today 10 Best Travel Poll.

KARE 11 reports Visit St. Paul Vice President for Marketing Adam Johnson said St. Paul winning would be no small feat.

"We are up against more traditional locales like Honolulu, Hawaii; Naples, Florida; and Santa Fe, New Mexico, said Johnson.

Santa Fe was running second followed by Naples. Savannah, Georgia and Victoria, British Columbia rounded out the top five.

10 Best says St. Paul is not "an obvious choice as a romantic getaway, but couples love it for its diverse romantic offerings, like leisurely paddle-wheeler rides along the Mississippi, beer tastings, or ice skating."

David Miller, general manager of the St. Paul Hotel said the city is "very romantic," according to the Star Tribune. Miller adds, "From the outdoor ice rink to strolling through the parks full of thousands of lights, how can you not find romance around every corner?"

The Pioneer Press reports St. Paul was selected by a 10Best and USA Today panel as a nominee, voting opened Dec. 30 and continues until Jan. 27. The winner will be announced on Jan. 29.
