St. Paul PD investigating second death in Dayton's Bluff area in 24 hours

Police are investigating a homicide in the city's Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, just one day after a fatal shooting just a few blocks away.

The St. Paul Police Department tweeted the incident Thursday happened at Phalen Boulevard and Earl Street, near the bridge, and in a subsequent tweet described it as a homicide.

The Pioneer Press reports it appears to be a fatal shooting, and happened around 7 p.m. when a group of people was crossing the bridge.

On Wednesday night, a man was fatally shot in an alley on the 900 block of Reaney Avenue. That victim was identified Thursday as 37-year-old Synika George James of St. Paul. About 90 after the shooting, a few miles away, there were more reports of shots fired.

The victim in the Thursday night shooting will be identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

The Star Tribune reports witnesses say it was a drive-by shooting, but police haven't confirmed that.

St. Paul police crime statistics show there were 11 homicides in the city in 2014, and 14 each of the two years before that.
