After $243 million in renovations, the Union Depot in St. Paul celebrated its reopening Saturday, marking the first time the depot has been fully open to the public in 41 years, Minnesota Public Radio reported.

The site of the 33-acre transit hub was bought by the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority in 2005, and the two-year renovation was made possible with state, federal and county funds.

Bus service by MetroTransit will begin this weekend at the Union Depot, and Jefferson Bus Lines is coming in January. Amtrak is expected to begin service late next year and light rail is expected in 2014, MPR reported.

The last train rolled out of the depot in 1971.

According to Pioneer Press, Sen. Amy Klobuchar paid tribute to the Union Depot as "historic, iconice" and "one of the great railway stations of the 20th century," while adding it can be "modern, efficient" and "one of the great American railways stations of the 21st century."
