St. Scholastica offers free courses toward degree completion

Students at the College of St. Scholastica can now apply education from free online courses toward completion of their college degrees, which ultimately could save students thousands of dollars, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The private college based in Duluth is now offering credit for massive open online courses, the newspaper reports.

Often nicknamed MOOCs, the open courses have been around several years, but started getting real buzz in recent months.

Forbes reports that traditional universities have been struggling with the question: Are MOOCs a threat or opportunity?

This was the year that some elite universities decided they wanted in, the New York Times reported earlier this month.

Among other big players in education, Bill Gates is interested in MOOCs.
