The State patrol is looking for the driver of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian on a Twin Cities highway early Sunday.

The crash happened on Highway 169 and Belle Plaine Trail in Belle Plaine around 5:15 a.m., according to the State Patrol's incident report.

The vehicle hit the pedestrian in the northbound lanes, the agency says.

The State Patrol identified the victim as 29-year-old Derek Fath of Bell Plaine on Sunday afternoon.

No details about the possible suspect car are available, and the State Patrol is asking anyone who was involved in the incident, or may have been in the area, to call West Metro State Patrol at 651-582-1503.

St. Jesse Grabow told BringMeTheNews they don't have any more information than what's in the incident report as of about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, but investigators are actively working.

At least 227 people have been killed on Minnesota roads this year, according to the state's Toward Zero Deaths initiative website.

More than a dozen of those have been pedestrian deaths, with Donna Berger, the director of the Office of Traffic Safety, telling BringMeTheNews in May that motorists need to pay attention, and pedestrians need to be smart and safe when crossing the road.

In all of last year 40 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents, which is about average, Berger explained.
