Extra seat belt enforcement starts statewide on Friday

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reports out of the 932 motorists that have been killed in the last three years, only 45 percent were wearing their seat belt. Violators face a $25 fine.

State Patrol: No fatalities overnight

The State Patrol reports that there were 88 crashes and 16 traffic-related injuries around Minnesota overnight, but no fatalities. This is the third consecutive year that there have not been any fatalities on New Year's Eve in Minnesota.

The counties selected for extra enforcement are those with the most deaths and injuries caused by alcohol-related crashes. They include the Twin Cities area plus Duluth, Rochester, and St. Cloud.

Minn. State Patrol impounds 'unsafe' car with gas tank on front seat

The Minnesota State Patrol says it has impounded a car in Koochiching County with an unusual alternative fuel source. A trooper spokesperson says the driver of a rusted out Ford Pinto had a gas can on the front seat with a hose that ran out the passenger window, around the front and under the hood, which was "rigged up to the engine."
