State senator leaves leadership position in run up to gubernatorial race

A Republican state senator who has formally announced his candidacy for governor has announced that he is giving up his Senate leadership position.

The Associated Press reports that State Sen. Dave Thompson of Lakeville resigned as assistant minority leader. In a letter to other Republican senators, Thompson said it would be unwise to continue in the role while he is campaigning to unseat DFL incumbent Gov. Mark Dayton.

Thompson is not resigning his Senate seat. The attorney and former radio talk show host was first elected to the Legislature in 2010.

Thompson is one of several Republicans seeking the nomination to run against Dayton.
